History

The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog in the hound family. The Basset is a scent hound that was originally bred for the purpose of hunting hare. Their sense of smell and ability to ground-scent is second only to the Bloodhound. According to the Basset Hound Club of America, the height of a Basset should not exceed 14 inches or 36 cm. Basset Hounds have large pendulous ears (known as “leathers”) that are very easily infected. Their ears are also very sensitive and do not allow air to circulate inside them, unlike other breeds with erect or more open ears. A Basset Hound’s ears must be cleaned inside and out frequently to avoid infections and ear mites.

Temperament

Basset Hounds are loyal to their people and have a pleasant, friendly disposition. Because they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, many of the features of the Basset Hounds have a purpose. Their long, low-set ears drag the ground and pick up scents, while the loose skin around their heads form wrinkles that further capture the scent of whatever they are tracking. Well-bred Bassets are even-tempered, and they get along well with children and other pets. They are not known for being aggressive or territorial, making them great family pets.

Care

Basset Hounds require little grooming, however they must have their ears cleaned on a regular basis to avoid infections. It is vital to regulate their eating and exercise levels because they are prone to obesity. Although Basset Hounds are not high-energy dogs, they do require frequent exercise in order to keep healthy and prevent boredom.. They are not advised for apartment life because they require a lot of area to move around. Basset Hounds are also prone to health disorders such as hip dysplasia, ear infections, and obesity, so regular vet visits are essential.
